Following a hectic weekend to VAR, the bones are picked by former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher out.
Even the Old Firm derby and the north London derby both took center stage over the weekend but that there was lots of controversy with three red cards straight out throughout the Premier League, a mad Norwich supervisor and a fresh argument brewing on where the bar should lie ‘clear and clear errors’.
So just how was it seen by Dermot? Here’s Sky Sports’ resident ref’s opinion…
INCIDENT: the goal of Henri Lansbury is ruled out as the referee’s whistle has goneso that Jack Grealish can be booked for simulation after heading down beneath Gary Cahill’s challenge. VAR doesn’t provide a penalty.
VERDICT: Wrong call, Grealish did not dive.
DERMOT SAYS:”VAR was utilized partially on this. You have to go backwards on it. Until the ball was struck by Lansbury did the referee blow the whistle? He did, there’s no doubt. So there’s no way.
“You work backward, was it a penalty, did Gary Cahill create a filthy? The VAR says and looks at that. I believe that they’re correct, it was not a foul, and that means you default back into the swimmer’s conclusion which is that Jack Grealish simulated.
“If you want it or not, VAR couldn’t do anything about that. All of it defaulted back to Kevin Friend.
“If the whistle had not gone, VAR would have assessed whether the target was legal, and also the referee may well have stated he felt that there was a simulation, therefore I’m likely to provide that.
“They can assess whether it’s a punishment, but they cannot check simulation. The referee made there, it is not the choice I would have produced but it was left by him.
“There is three signs if we wait patiently. You’ll be able to look at Since the referee chose to make his decision when he struck on the floor, that is the one thing.
“The referee’s mindset is that he has gone over too easily, that he’s attempting to win a penalty. I believed it wasn’t a dip. I thought Cahill has made contact”
INCIDENT: Harry Kane goes down under a challenge from Sokratis at the last moment from the Arsenal penalty area, against providing a spot-kick, however the Warriors and VAR both decide.
VERDICT: Right call.
DERMOT SAYS:”For me personally, certainly not a penalty. If you look, he takes his floor measures across him sees Sokratis and goes into him. He acquired this perfect, although I believed Martin Atkinson refereed a game in a fashion that was good.
“There’s contact there, we don’t not wanting a lot of yellows when contact’s made but I think that it is not a penalty, that’s the crucial problem.”
INCIDENT: following having a VAR review he is given a card, although Youri Tielemans seems to postage on Callum Wilson
VERDICT: Properly handled dependent on what the participant saw.
DERMOT SAYS:”It doesn’t hit on the threshold, the bar is set very large. What shows it’s the very first clip you watch, a card for me personally, some people I’ve spoken to say this isn’t, the same angle the referee sees, it does not seem a card. During play it did not look a reddish.
“I think the threshold has to be everyone’s going to go,’yeah we are in that camp’.”
INCIDENT: Jonny Evans when the two players Opt for a 50/50, the participant gives nothing is stood on by Jefferson Lerma
DERMOT SAYS:”The referee didn’t see it give a foul. The VAR can not intervene, although it is surely a yellow, and a second yellowish when you visit it. The argument is, can it be a red card challenge? When you take a look at the Tielemans one and that is not given as a red, it would be very difficult to give a red for this.”
INCIDENT: Ahead Jordan Jones is sent off for Rangers, Ryan Jack and Callum McGregor both perpetrate bad tackles on Boli Bolignoli and Scott Arfield, respectively. Neither is booked.
VERDICT: Right telephone number.
DERMOT SAYS:”There’s some of them. It moves in hard from McGregor, and rather low. If he quits play he’ll give a card, the referee plays on, I believe.
“With Jack, It’s a yellow card in the best. He’s gone in tough. The two players are dedicated, it’s inevitable they are going to come back. He even gets just a little touch on the ball.”
INCIDENT: The ball appears to hit Isaac Hayden’s hand moments before Fabian Schar scores to equalise for Newcastle, that goes unnoticed by the referee or VAR
VERDICT: Incorrect call.
DERMOT SAYS:”It didn’t get picked up. Whether that’s because they tried to keep the game and also do it as fast as possible, I do not know.
“But what it’ll do, it’s all about reflection and moving forward it is going to be is it offside, is there a filthy, is there a handball – move through the checklist, and if it takes another 10 or 15 seconds then so be it”
INCIDENT: Sebastien Haller not given penalty after contact at the Norwich box, so the decision does not overturn
VERDICT: Incorrect decision.
DERMOT SAYS:”I think ti’s a penalty. The ball is the hint, look at it and it goes away. It’s about reflection, the referees are meeting this week, it might be discussed that the VAR may have got included.
“It’s an ongoing process, we have said it may take three years to iron things out. I mentioned at the beginning of the year that it will be a bumpy ride, perhaps that’s one where they say it should have been overturned.”
INCIDENTS: Sebastian Farke is angered when Haller’s late challenge on Christoph Zimmermann and Andriy Yarmolenko elbow on Tom Trybull both go unpunished by VAR
VERDICT: VAR would not overturn either decision.
DERMOT SAYS:”On the foul, I believe he may be wrong to imply it wasn’t reviewed, it may happen to be looked at but since the game was not stopped, it’s looked at in drama. It is low, it’s endangering his opponent or not dangerous. It’s definitely not a card.
“It is rather tricky to say it is an elbow . How fast it happens and if it is skimmed to his chest possibly but I would not call it malicious or nasty.”
